Jeffrey's Bay (Afrikaans: Jeffreysbaai), or J-bay as it's fondly known, is a vibrant coastal town with a population of 27,107 (2011 census), nestled in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. As the heart of the Kouga municipality, it’s renowned worldwide as a surfing mecca, thanks to the legendary right-hand point break at Supertubes Beach. Conveniently located off the N2 Highway, it's just 75 kilometers southwest of Port Elizabeth.

History

The town's name traces back to Jeffrey, the senior partner of Jeffrey & Glendinnings, who opened a store in 1849 at the site where Jeffreys Bay now thrives. He is believed to be the first settler in the area.

By the late 1960s and early '70s, Jeffreys Bay had transformed into a laid-back hippie haven, laying the foundation for the flourishing surf culture it’s famous for today. Once a quiet fishing village, J-bay has rapidly grown into one of South Africa’s fastest expanding urban centers. Its surf status skyrocketed thanks to Bruce Brown's iconic film The Endless Summer, cementing its place on the global surfing map.

Today, Jeffrey's Bay (J-bay) has evolved from its humble beginnings into a vibrant and dynamic coastal town, while still holding onto its laid-back surf culture roots. It's one of the most popular surf destinations in the world, attracting both professional and amateur surfers year-round, particularly for its world-class waves at Supertubes Beach. The annual World Surf League (WSL) event, the J-Bay Open, draws international attention, turning the town into a buzzing hub of surf action every July.

Beyond surfing, J-bay offers a blend of natural beauty and modern conveniences.
